The most well known group of high school cliques are “the jocks or the preps, the kids who get along with the teachers, who go out for sports or lead the student government, who maintain their grade point average and are unquestionably headed for college.” (Odyssey) They are the overachievers of their grade, and strive to accomplish goals in high school and later in life. The jock stereotype isn’t always a positive thing because they care about school. “A jock is a stereotype of an athlete, or more to the point, someone who mainly accesses sports and sports culture, and does not much access or have access to intellectual culture.” They may care about the grade they are getting in a class, however, they may not care about how they receive those grades. They are commonly athletes that care more about their sports career than their academic career. Jocks seek independence from family and use school as an outlet.
The “preps” are commonly associated with the athletes, they’re known for caring about school and their reputation. They tend to dress in nicer clothes, and work harder in their academic life than others. Many of them are involved in clubs that promote school spirit and help out the community and environment. “Although the typical “prep school” stereotypes are not nearly as damaging as many of those based off of race or gender, it is still vexing when a person unfamiliar with the private school system immediately writes the students there off as extremely spoiled, supremely wealthy, obnoxiously intelligent snobs.” (New) This group is easy to identify because of their physical appearance and they have a knack to show school spirit.
