On the opposite side of the spectrum from jocks, preps and nerds there is the rebellious kids. “You might know them as hoods, greasers, losers, or burnouts — the kids who don't get along with teachers, tend to get into trouble, or just plain don't care about school.” Burnouts seek independence from “the man” or institutions - which includes school. They feel a sense of rebellion because the do not see a connection from their life at school and their careers after their education. Kids classified under burnouts commonly look for drugs and alcohol for their outlet of rebellion and independence. Their priorities are focused on who is throwing the next party, instead of school related problems. Many are considered the “stoners” or “partiers”, they chose that lifestyle as their form of rebellion and escaping everyday life. This social group is commonly looked down upon because they are viewed more as disappointments, who lack focus and motivation in life outside of their drug haze. Along with the rebellious group are the “goths” and “emos”. They rebel against the norm by dressing and looking different than the other social groups. Gothic people wear darker clothes, wear more makeup, and even dye their hair. Emo’s shave their heads, color their hair, and get piercings and tattoos. They use their appearances to try to stand out and stray away from the “normal” people. “They have dyed black hair, black nails, white face makeup, black eye makeup and black lipstick -- maybe some designs drawn at the edge of the eyes in black eyeliner” (Lipsyte) Their appearance is an enormous attention getter, picking them out of a crowd, which they enjoy.
